How the formula works
KDP's printing cost is a fixed cost plus a per-page rate, both set by your format, ink type, and marketplace:
printing cost = fixed cost + (page count × per-page cost)
Your royalty is your list price times the royalty rate for your price tier (50% or 60% for print, 35% or 70% for Kindle eBooks), minus that printing cost:
royalty = (list price × royalty rate) − printing cost

How does KDP calculate printing cost?
KDP uses a simple formula: fixed cost + (page count × per-page cost) = printing cost. The fixed cost and per-page rate both depend on your format (paperback or hardcover), ink/paper type, trim size, and the Amazon marketplace the book is ordered from.
What's the difference between the 50% and 60% royalty rate?
For paperback and hardcover, KDP pays 60% royalty once your list price crosses a marketplace-specific threshold (for example, $9.99 or more on Amazon.com), and 50% below it. Your royalty is (list price × royalty rate) − printing cost.
What is Expanded Distribution?
Expanded Distribution is an optional paperback channel (bookstores, libraries, other retailers) that pays a flat 40% royalty regardless of your list price tier, still minus printing cost.
What's the minimum list price for my book?
Your minimum list price is the lowest price at which your royalty doesn't go negative — roughly printing cost ÷ royalty rate. This calculator computes it automatically for every marketplace based on your book's specs.
What's the difference between the 35% and 70% Kindle eBook royalty?
The 35% plan has no delivery fee and works at any eligible price point. The 70% plan pays more per sale but only within a marketplace-specific price band (as of July 2026, $2.99–$12.99 on Amazon.com) and subtracts a delivery fee based on your file size.
Why do some marketplaces show 'unavailable' instead of a number?
KDP doesn't publish every ink type or format in every marketplace — for example, hardcover isn't offered in Japan, Canada, or Australia, and standard color paperback isn't offered in Australia. Rather than guess, this calculator shows those combinations as unavailable.
Does this include VAT?
No. Kindle eBook royalty figures here exclude VAT, which KDP subtracts from list price before applying the royalty rate in some marketplaces. Check your KDP dashboard for your exact after-VAT payout.
