At 1.36× this barcode is 2.00 in × 1.62 in. KDP reserves 2.00 in × 1.20 in on the back cover.
That is 0.42 in too large. Switch to "Fit KDP's barcode area" to drop to 1.36×, which fits and stays inside the 0.8–2.0× range the standard allows.
The white margin around the bars is part of the barcode. Don't crop it and don't tint it — a cropped quiet zone is the most common reason a printed barcode won't scan.
The SVG keeps the digits as live text so your designer can convert them to outlines; the PNG has them already rasterised, so it looks identical everywhere. Both carry the same true physical size.
First: does your book need this at all?
For a large share of KDP authors the honest answer is no, and it is worth settling before you spend time on artwork. When you publish a paperback or hardcover on KDP you are offered a free ISBN. If you take it, KDP prints its own barcode into the reserved area on the back cover as part of publishing. You leave that area empty, and placing your own barcode there causes a conflict rather than solving one.
This generator exists for the other case: you bought your own ISBN from your national agency — Bowker in the United States, Nielsen in the United Kingdom, and so on — and you are supplying finished cover artwork that has to carry its own barcode. That is also the situation for anyone printing the same edition through IngramSpark or a local printer alongside KDP, because those services expect the barcode to already be on the file you hand them.
Free KDP ISBN versus buying your own
The difference is not quality — a free KDP ISBN is a real ISBN and retailers treat it as one. The difference is who is recorded as the publisher and where the edition can go.
A KDP-assigned ISBN names Amazon's imprint as publisher of record and is tied to KDP printing. That is invisible to most readers and costs nothing. An ISBN you buy makes you or your imprint the publisher of record, and the same number can be used with any printer or distributor, which matters the moment you want the identical edition available through a channel KDP does not reach. Prices vary sharply by country: some national agencies charge little or nothing, while a single ISBN bought individually elsewhere can cost more than a block of ten.
One practical note that catches people out: each format is a separate edition and needs its own ISBN. Paperback and hardcover are two numbers, not one. Ebooks on KDP need none at all.
Where the barcode goes, and how big it is
KDP reserves an area of about 2 × 1.2 inches in the lower-right of the back cover, with clear space around it. That area is a keep-out zone, not a barcode size — a common and expensive misreading, because scaling a symbol to fill the box makes it roughly a third larger than the specification allows.
A standard EAN-13 at full size is about 1.47 inches wide and 1.02 inches tall, so it fits inside the reserved area comfortably. Add the 5-digit price block and the pair grows to roughly 2.21 inches, which is wider than the reserved area — so it has to be printed slightly smaller. The specification allows any magnification between 80% and 200% of nominal size, and the tool above picks the largest one that fits and shows you the measurement it used.
Whatever size you settle on, the white space at each end travels with it. Those quiet zones are part of the symbol: a scanner uses them to find where the bars begin and end, and a designer who crops the artwork tight to the outermost bar has broken the barcode while making the layout look neater. The > character printed at the right-hand edge is a light-margin indicator, a long-standing book-trade convention marking exactly where that margin ends.
What the digits mean
An ISBN-13 is a Bookland EAN — a real EAN-13 product code whose first three digits, 978 or 979, are a country code invented for the book trade. After the prefix comes a registration group identifying a country or language area, then a registrant element for the publisher, then the title element for the specific edition, and finally a check digit.
That check digit is why a mistyped ISBN can be caught before it reaches print. It is derived from the twelve digits before it, so almost any single-digit error or transposition makes the arithmetic fail. The tool above recomputes it and tells you which digit it expected, which usually locates the typo immediately. ISBN-10 uses a different, mod-11 calculation whose check value can come out as ten — written as the letter X, which is why some older ISBNs end in a letter.
The bars themselves encode only twelve of the thirteen digits. The leading digit is carried in the pattern of odd and even encodings used across the left-hand half, which is how thirteen digits fit into twelve digits' worth of bars — and why the first digit is printed outside the symbol, to the left of the first bar.
ISBN-10 and ISBN-13
ISBN-13 has been the standard since 2007 and is what you should use everywhere. ISBN-10 still appears on older stock, in library records and in some retailer databases, so converting between them is occasionally necessary. A 978-prefixed ISBN-13 converts back to ISBN-10 by dropping the prefix and recalculating the check digit.
A 979-prefixed ISBN-13 does not convert at all. The 979 range exists precisely because the 10-digit space was exhausted, so those numbers never had a 10-digit form and never will. If a system asks you for an ISBN-10 for a 979 book, the system is out of date.
How this barcode is built
The symbol is generated from the published EAN-13 specification in your browser — the module pattern, the guard bars, the quiet zones and the human-readable digits are all laid out from the same geometry model, in millimetres, and both downloads are produced from it. The SVG declares its size in millimetres so a place-at-100% in a layout tool lands it at true physical size; the PNG carries a resolution tag describing the pixels it actually contains.
That last detail is why the resolution you pick may be reported back slightly differently. At 300 DPI a single module works out to just under four pixels, so the tool rounds to a whole number of pixels per bar and records the resolution that produces. The physical size stays exactly right; only the number moves. Bars of unequal width are a real cause of verification failures, and rounding is how they happen.
Our correctness check is not visual. Every build renders the symbol to pixels and decodes it with an independent barcode reader, including deliberately corrupted and quiet-zone-cropped versions that must fail to decode — because a barcode that looks right and scans wrong is the only failure mode that matters here.

Do I even need a barcode if KDP gave me a free ISBN?
No. If you took KDP's free ISBN, KDP prints its own barcode into the reserved area on your back cover during publishing — you should leave that area blank and not place a barcode there yourself. Should I use KDP's free ISBN or buy my own?
The free one is genuinely free and fine for most authors selling only on Amazon. The trade-off is attribution and portability: a KDP-assigned ISBN lists Amazon's imprint as publisher of record and can only be used for KDP printing, while your own ISBN makes you the publisher of record and travels with the edition to any other printer or distributor. Buy your own if you plan to print the same edition elsewhere, or if the publisher line matters to how the book is received.
Why doesn't the barcode fill KDP's whole barcode area?
It isn't supposed to. The 2 × 1.2 inch area is a reserved space, not a barcode size. An EAN-13 at full size is about 1.47 × 1.02 inches, so it sits inside that area with clear space around it. The one case where the reverse happens is the 5-digit price add-on: at full size the pair is about 2.21 inches wide, which is wider than the reserved area, so this tool shrinks it to a magnification that fits and tells you which one it used.
What is the small block of five digits next to the barcode?
That is the price add-on. Its first digit names a currency and the other four are the price in cents, so 51299 is 12.99 US dollars. Most books ship the code 90000 instead, which means "no price encoded" — a price printed into the barcode cannot be changed without reprinting the cover, so encoding one commits you to it.
Why is my ISBN being rejected?
The last character of an ISBN is a check digit calculated from all the others, so a single mistyped or transposed digit makes the whole number fail arithmetic. When that happens this tool tells you which digit it expected, which usually points straight at the typo. An ISBN-10 can also legitimately end in the letter X — that stands for a check value of ten and is valid.
Can I turn a 979 ISBN into a 10-digit one?
No, and nothing can. The 10-digit ISBN space ran out, which is exactly why the 979 prefix was introduced — numbers issued under it have no 10-digit equivalent. Only 978-prefixed ISBN-13s convert back. Use the ISBN-13 everywhere; it has been the international standard since 2007.
PNG or SVG — which should I give my cover designer?
SVG if their layout tool takes vector files (InDesign, Illustrator, Affinity), because it stays sharp at any size and the digits remain editable text they can convert to outlines. PNG if the tool only accepts images; this one embeds the true print resolution in the file so layout software places it at the correct physical size instead of guessing. Both carry identical geometry.
Will the barcode still scan once it's printed?
It will, provided three things stay true. Keep the white margin on both sides — that quiet zone is part of the symbol and cropping it is the most common cause of scan failure. Don't stretch one axis; scale both together or not at all. And keep strong contrast: dark bars on a white background, never a tinted or transparent panel behind them. Always scan a printed proof before approving a cover.
