Enabling every Amazon storefront in KDP is one checkbox cluster—not twelve separate publishers. What is separate is the economics and the listing surface: currency, printing-cost table, royalty tier thresholds, tax display rules, and whether readers even see a description in their language. Authors who “set one USD price and hope” leave money (or compliance margin) on the table in the UK, EU, Japan, Canada, and Australia.

You do not need twelve interior PDFs for twelve Amazon domains. You do need a pricing pass that respects each store’s currency and floors—and a content plan if readers outside your language will open the sample.

The 12 marketplaces (and 8 cost groups)

KDP sells print and Kindle titles into multiple Amazon stores. For printing cost and royalty-band tables, several European stores share one euro-denominated table. SmartKDP’s formula package therefore groups them:

That is 12 marketplaces → 8 cost groups. DE/FR/ES/IT/NL are not five different manufacturing formulas; they are five storefronts on one euro cost table. Poland and Sweden each have their own currency and published print figures (with known ebook gaps—see below).

Known gaps (honest, not invented)

Public KDP help does not publish every ebook parameter for every store. Our calculator returns unavailable rather than a fake number when:

  • Poland / Sweden: per-MB ebook delivery fees and 70% price-eligibility bands are not fully published the way US/UK/EUR/JP/CA/AU bands are.

Print royalty math for those stores can still be estimated where tables exist. Always re-check high-stakes prices in KDP’s own royalty calculator and dashboard.

What actually differs when you expand markets

1. Currency and list-price entry

KDP’s Price Your Book help describes two approaches:

  • Primary marketplace based: set a primary store currency; KDP converts for other markets (conversions can drift; matched prices are not guaranteed across taxes and costs).
  • Per-marketplace prices: enter amounts yourself in each currency. Manual prices in non-primary markets do not auto-update when you change the primary price.

Minimum and maximum list prices—and ebook 35% vs 70% price bands—are marketplace-specific. Ebook band changes (for example the 70% maximum moving on Amazon.com) are announced on eBook list price requirements; equivalents exist in other currencies. Defer exact floors and bands to the live help page and the KDP Royalty Calculator so this post does not rot when a band moves.

2. Printing cost group

Print royalties still use:

printing cost = fixed cost + (page count × per-page cost)
royalty ≈ (list price × rate) − printing cost

Fixed and per-page rates depend on format, ink/paper, trim class, and marketplace cost group. A US black-and-white paperback and a JP or AU paperback with the same page count are not the same manufacturing bill. Expanded Distribution (where available) is a separate rate path—model it only if you use it.

3. Tax display vs royalty base

Tax is the multi-market gotcha authors misread:

Customer-facing price and your royalty base are not always the same number. If a store shows a VAT-inclusive retail price, do not assume that full figure is your royalty multiplier.

4. Categories, keywords, and language

Browse trees and search language differ by store. A US category path is not automatically a DE path. Keywords typed in English do not optimize a Japanese catalog. Rights (worldwide vs individual territories) are a legal/territorial choice separate from “I enabled the marketplace checkbox.”

5. What a translated listing does not change

Translating title, subtitle, and description (or publishing a translated manuscript) can unlock readers—it does not:

  • Change the print cost formula for that marketplace
  • Bypass minimum list price or royalty tier thresholds
  • Fix wrong distribution rights
  • Make an English-only interior suddenly compliant with local content expectations if the sample is unreadable for that audience

Translation is a demand and UX decision layered on top of the pricing map—not a substitute for it.

What stays the same vs what changes when expanding KDP marketplaces

Practical rollout order

  1. Freeze manufacturing inputs — trim, page count, ink, paper. Spine and print cost move with them.
  2. Pick a primary marketplace that matches your main audience and tax comfort.
  3. Run print + ebook scenarios for every cost group you care about in the KDP Royalty Calculator—not only the US.
  4. Set or override list prices so each store clears its minimum and lands in the royalty tier you intend.
  5. Decide language coverage — English-only worldwide vs localized metadata (and, if needed, translated interiors). Use Listing Studio for structured listing work.
  6. Confirm rights — worldwide vs individual territories in KDP.
  7. Spot-check live detail pages after publish (price, tax line, sample language).
  8. Re-price when KDP moves bands or your page count changes—especially after the July 2026 ebook 70% band expansion and any future updates.

Worked example (illustrative)

You publish a 200-page black-and-white paperback plus a Kindle edition.

  1. Calculate US print royalty at your intended USD list price.
  2. Switch the same specs to UK, EUR group, CA, AU, JP in the royalty calculator—note how print cost and the 50/60 threshold currency change the “keep.”
  3. For PL and SE, use published print figures; treat missing ebook delivery/band parameters as unknown, not zero.
  4. If euro retail must look like a clean €X.99 to shoppers, set EUR list price intentionally rather than trusting a stale conversion from USD.
  5. Leave Expanded Distribution off until the thinner 40% path still clears your floor after print cost.
  6. Only after prices work, invest in a German or Japanese description—if the sample is still English-only, set expectations in the blurb.

Exact dollars/euros belong in the calculator; the sequence is the durable part.

How many Amazon marketplaces does KDP support?

KDP’s UI and help pages list multiple Amazon stores for distribution and pricing. This site’s royalty tools model 12 common KDP marketplaces (US, UK, DE, FR, ES, IT, NL, PL, SE, JP, CA, AU). Confirm the exact list in your KDP account—Amazon can add storefronts.

Do I need a different interior file for each country?

Usually no for language-identical editions. Manufacturing options (trim, ink, paper) are chosen in title setup; cost differs by marketplace table, not by uploading twelve PDFs. A translated edition is a different product with its own files and metadata.

Why do Germany and France share the same printing costs in your calculator?

KDP publishes matching euro print/royalty tables for DE, FR, ES, IT, and NL. Grouping them avoids five copy-paste cost pages and matches how the rates are published.

Should I use automatic price conversion or set each marketplace manually?

Conversion is convenient; manual prices are for when you care about local psychological price points, tier thresholds, or tax-display outcomes. KDP notes that manual non-primary prices do not update when you change the primary price.

Does VAT reduce my royalty?

KDP’s documented examples calculate royalties from list price without VAT (and for eligible 70% ebooks, less delivery costs). Customer checkout may still show tax. Read the EU/UK tax help pages for print and ebook separately—do not assume US mental math.

What if I only write in English?

You can still distribute to non-English stores if you hold the rights. Expect weaker conversion where readers cannot sample in their language. Pricing and categories still need a local pass even if the manuscript stays English.

Will translating my description raise royalties?

No. Translation can improve conversion; royalty rate still follows list price, plan, marketplace tables, and (for print) printing cost. Fix price floors first, then language.
