This is our own compiled reference to Amazon's print Books categories — 475 categories, last compiled 2026-07-25. It is not fetched from Amazon and is not a complete mirror: Amazon lists far more categories per store and changes them without notice. Always confirm the exact wording in KDP's own category picker before you publish.
Category names shown here are the English ones used by Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, and Amazon.com.au. The other stores list their categories in their own language; we show you the structure and link into the store rather than guess at a translation.
How KDP categories work
Amazon organises its store as a tree. Every book sits on one or more shelves, and each shelf has a path that reads from the department down to the most specific category:
Books > Humor & Entertainment > Puzzles & Games > Sudoku
When you publish, KDP lets you place the book on three of those shelves per format. The choice matters more than it looks: your bestseller rank is calculated within the categories you're in, so a well-chosen specific shelf can put a book on a chart that a broad one never would.
Since mid-2023 KDP shows Amazon's own categories directly rather than asking for a BISAC code, so there is no translation step to second-guess. The full path is still worth having, though — it's what Author Central asks for when you request additional categories beyond your first three.
Categories are per-store. A book sold on Amazon.com and Amazon.de is shelved separately in each, and the German store names its shelves in German. This tool shows the shared structure everywhere, and only shows a copyable path for the stores whose category names are English.
What is an Amazon browse category?
A browse category is one shelf in Amazon's own store navigation — the tree readers click through, like Books > Humor & Entertainment > Puzzles & Games > Sudoku. When you publish, KDP asks you to place your book on up to three of those shelves, and that choice decides which bestseller lists your book can chart in.
Do I still choose categories with BISAC codes?
No. Until mid-2023 KDP asked for BISAC subject codes and translated them into Amazon shelves behind the scenes. It now shows Amazon's own store categories directly, so what you pick is what you get. BISAC codes still matter elsewhere in publishing — libraries, wholesalers, and non-Amazon retailers use them — but they are a separate scheme from the one on this page.
How many categories can I choose?
Three per format, set during the Details step and editable afterwards from your KDP bookshelf. Paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions each get their own three. If you want to be listed in more, you can email Author Central with your ASIN and the exact category paths you want — which is where the copyable path on this page is useful.
Where does this category data come from?
We compiled it ourselves from Amazon's public store structure, and the page shows how many categories it holds and when it was last compiled. It is not fetched live from Amazon and it is not a complete mirror — Amazon lists many more categories per store than any hand-compiled reference can hold, and it changes them without notice. Treat this as a fast way to find and understand a category, then confirm the exact wording in KDP's own picker.
Why don't the non-English stores show a category path?
Because we would have to invent one. Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp and the rest list their categories in their own languages, and we don't have verified translations. Showing you an English path under a German store would look authoritative and be wrong — you'd paste it into an Author Central request and it would be rejected. So those stores get the structure and a link into the store, and we say plainly that the names aren't ours to give.
Does this show how competitive a category is?
No, and it deliberately doesn't guess. Sales volume and competition figures need real, current bestseller data; inventing a difficulty score from a category name would be worse than saying nothing. Our BSR Sales Estimator covers the sales-rank side of that question today.
Is this Amazon's official category list?
No. SmartKDP is not affiliated with Amazon, and this is our own reference compiled for authors, not a feed from Amazon. KDP's help pages are linked under the tool so you can check anything against the source.
Which categories work best for puzzle and low-content books?
Most land under Humor & Entertainment > Puzzles & Games — with separate shelves for crossword puzzles, sudoku, word games, and logic and brain teasers — or under Children's Books > Activities, Crafts & Games for activity, coloring, and puzzle books aimed at kids. This tool goes deeper in those subtrees than in the broad fiction ones, because that is where the choice actually matters.
