How the estimate works

Amazon never publishes how rank maps to sales, so every estimate — anyone's — is a model. Ours is built from dated, publicly observed rank-to-sales data points, and it works like this:

rank → interpolate between observed data points (log-log) → daily sales mid-point ± uncertainty band × 30.4 → monthly

The relationship between rank and sales is approximately a power law: sales fall off steeply at the top of the store and flatten into a long tail. We keep a small set of verified anchor points per marketplace and store, and interpolate your rank between the two nearest ones on a log-log scale.

Every anchor also carries an uncertainty band, and the band gets wider the deeper into the catalog you go — observations past the top few hundred thousand ranks genuinely scatter more. That band is where the low–high range and the confidence badge come from: they are the model being honest about what it knows, not a disclaimer bolted on afterwards. Non-US marketplaces are modeled as scaled versions of the US curve (public data outside the US store is sparse), which is exactly why their ranges are wider.

The anchor data was last verified in July 2026 — the date is also shown on every estimate, so you never have to wonder how fresh the numbers are.

What is Amazon Best Sellers Rank (BSR)?

BSR is the sales ranking Amazon assigns every product within a store — #1 is the store's current best seller. For books you'll find it in the “Product details” section of the listing, e.g. “Best Sellers Rank: #12,345 in Books”. It updates roughly hourly and reflects recent sales with a decaying memory of older ones.

Why does this calculator show a range instead of one number?

Because a single number would be false precision. Amazon doesn't publish rank-to-sales data — every estimator, including this one, works from community-observed data points. Two books at the same rank can genuinely differ in daily sales, and the uncertainty grows the deeper into the catalog you go. We show the honest likely range and a confidence badge instead of pretending otherwise.

How is the estimate calculated?

We model each marketplace and store as a piecewise power-law curve over dated, community-observed rank-to-sales data points, and interpolate your rank between them on a log-log scale. The full methodology is documented right on this page — see “How the estimate works” above the FAQ.

Why do I need to sign in to get an estimate?

The curve data and the estimation model run on our servers and are actively maintained — sign-in (free) plus fair-use rate limits is how we keep the tool fast for authors instead of scrapers. Your inputs aren't stored with your account.

What do the confidence levels mean?

High means your rank sits in a well-observed part of the curve (roughly the top of the store), so the range is tight. Medium means directional — good for comparing niches, not for forecasting revenue. Low means deep-catalog territory where data is sparse; treat the numbers as an order of magnitude.

Is a Books rank comparable to a Kindle Store rank?

No — they're separate stores with separate curves. A #10,000 rank in Books (print) implies different daily sales than #10,000 in the Kindle Store. Always match the store to the rank you copied: “#N in Books” → Books, “#N in Kindle Store” → Kindle.

How do daily and monthly figures relate?

Monthly is daily × 30.4 (the average month length). It assumes the book keeps its current rank all month — real sales fluctuate, so treat monthly numbers as a run-rate, not a forecast.

How often is the curve data updated?

Each estimate shows the date the curve data was last verified, and the same date is stated in the methodology section. When Amazon's rank behavior shifts, we re-verify the anchors and bump that date.
