Why the free tier here is the whole file
Every hosted background remover pays for a GPU each time you press the button, so the free tier is a small preview and the full-size file is the product. That trade is real and it is theirs to make. It is not ours: the model runs on your device, so the marginal cost of your cut-out is zero and there is nothing to ration. Full resolution, no watermark, no account.
The cost you do pay is the first download — a few megabytes of model, fetched when you press the button and cached by your browser afterwards. On a slow connection that is a wait. On every cut-out after it, there is none.
What a cut-out cannot fix
Removing a background does not add pixels. If the subject is 600 px across it is still 600 px across afterwards, and on a 6×9 in cover that prints soft whatever the background is doing. Check the real printed resolution before you commit — the Book Studio editor shows it on every placed image, and the free 300 DPI checker gives you the same verdict without an account.

Is the result really full resolution?
Yes. The cut-out comes back at exactly the pixels you put in, and the download is a PNG with real transparency. The usual free background remover gives you a 0.25-megapixel preview and charges for the full-size file; there is no preview tier here because there is no server bill to cover — the model runs on your own device.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The cut-out model is downloaded to your browser once and then everything happens locally — no account, no server, and no copy of your image anywhere but your device. There is one way to send it, and it is a button you press: “Open in Book Studio with this image” hands the result to the editor, which is where it is uploaded to your own library.
Why is there a download the first time?
Because the model has to reach your browser before it can run. It is a few megabytes, it is fetched only when you press the button — never when you open the page — and your browser caches it, so the second cut-out starts immediately. Nothing is downloaded if you never use the tool.
What does it struggle with?
Fine hair, fur, and anything semi-transparent like glass or a veil. A hard-edged subject — a book, a box, a bottle — comes out cleanly. When an edge is wrong you can paint it back or rub it out with the refine brush rather than starting again, and a sharper model is available on paid plans for the hair cases.
Can I use the cut-out on a KDP cover?
That is what it is for. Keep the PNG's transparency, place it in your cover layout, and check the printed resolution before you publish — a cut-out does not add pixels, so a small original is still a small original. The 300 DPI checker on this site gives you that verdict honestly.
