ASIN

Listing & discoverability

Also called: Amazon Standard Identification Number

The ten-character identifier Amazon assigns to every product in its catalog, including every book. It appears in the product URL and is how most Amazon tools refer to a title.

Every Amazon listing has an ASIN, and for books it is the identifier that actually matters day to day — it is in the URL, in reports, and in every third-party research tool.

Ebooks get an ASIN and nothing else. Print books get an ASIN too, but they also carry an ISBN, and for print the ISBN's digits form the basis of the ASIN. The two are not interchangeable: a paperback and its Kindle edition are separate listings with separate ASINs, even when they share a product page.

You cannot choose your ASIN and you cannot move one between titles. If you unpublish and republish a book rather than editing it in place, you get a new ASIN and lose the reviews and ranking history attached to the old one — which is why editing an existing listing is almost always the right move.
