KDP Hardcover vs Paperback: Which to Publish

Hardcover is not “paperback with a thicker cover.” On KDP it is a separate manufacturing option with its own fixed print cost, page-count band, trim-size list, cover template, ISBN, and marketplace availability. Authors who treat it as a free upgrade either underprice the format or design a wrap that cannot be built.
This guide is a decision framework: same royalty shape as paperback, different cost and constraints. The durable math (both formats)
KDP calculates print manufacturing the same way for paperback and hardcover:
printing cost = fixed cost + (page count × per-page cost)
royalty = (list price × royalty rate) − printing cost
What differs is which fixed cost and per-page table apply, which trim sizes and page counts are legal, and which stores and channels can sell the format. Bleed settings and cover finish do not change printing cost (KDP’s royalty calculator help states that explicitly for the print cost model).
KDP’s own hardcover overview: calculation method matches paperback, fixed cost is different. Illustrative help-page math for a 300-page regular-trim hardcover B&W US example has used a higher fixed component than a typical paperback of the same length—exact dollars belong in the live tables, not memorized here.
Royalty rates: same shape as paperback
On Amazon marketplaces where hardcover is supported, KDP describes 50% and 60% royalty rates for hardcovers the same way it does for paperbacks: rate × list price, then subtract printing cost. Expanded Distribution is not available for hardcover (see distribution below), so the 40% expanded path is a paperback-only decision.
Minimum list price still tracks the idea:
minimum list price ≈ printing cost ÷ royalty rate
…then compare to KDP’s published marketplace floors and tier thresholds. A hardcover’s higher print cost pushes the floor up—run both formats side by side before you promise a gift-price on the cover.

Canada and Australia are not listed as primary hardcover marketplaces in KDP’s hardcover help; availability there is described as depending on making the book available on Amazon.com (confirm live help when you set territories).
Spine and cover: lock page count before art
Hardcover and paperback do not share cover templates. Spine width still depends on page count, paper, and trim—but the wrap geometry (hinges, boards, bleed) is format-specific. KDP points authors to its cover calculator/template generator for hardcover specs.
Order that bites:
- Choose format(s) and trim that exist for that format
- Finalize page count (or a tight range)
- Run KDP Cover Size Calculator / KDP’s template for that format
- Design art
- Price with KDP Royalty Calculator
If you design a paperback wrap first and “scale it up,” you will re-export. If page count moves more than a little after the hardcover wrap is done, spine and hinge alignment move with it.
Decision framework: which to publish
Start with paperback when…
- You need Expanded Distribution or broadest marketplace coverage (including formats/markets where hardcover is missing)
- Page count is below 75 or above 550 (hardcover band)
- Trim size is outside the five hardcover sizes
- Unit economics only work at a lower list price and the hardcover print floor kills margin
- The book is a test niche and you want the lowest manufacturing fixed cost while you learn demand
Add or prefer hardcover when…
- Buyers in your category expect a gift or keepsake edition (children’s premium, coffee-table-adjacent, collector nonfiction)—after royalty math still works
- You already have a selling paperback and want a second ASIN with a unique ISBN and separate price
- You can price high enough that (list × rate) − hardcover print cost stays healthy in your primary markets
- You accept no Expanded Distribution and no Japan hardcover
Publish both when…
- You will maintain two cover files, two ISBNs, and two price grids
- You will link formats on the detail page (same content family)
- You have checked that the interior trim/page count is legal for both
- You can afford author/proof copies of the more expensive format for QA
“Both” is a product line decision, not a free checkbox.
Worked comparison (illustrative shape only)
Hold constant: same title, B&W interior, a trim that exists in both formats, ~200–300 pages, US-centric pricing.
- Printing cost rises for hardcover mainly via the higher fixed cost (and any table differences)—page-count slope still applies.
- Minimum list rises roughly with print cost ÷ rate.
- Royalty per sale at the same list price is lower for hardcover because more of the rate×list is eaten by manufacturing—unless you raise list enough to compensate.
- Expanded Distribution may add paperback reach at 40% − print; it does not apply to hardcover.

- Compare printing cost, min list, royalty, and margin—not just one “profit” number.
- Re-run at the list price you would actually put on the hardcover gift tier.
Cover size (after format is chosen)
- Open the KDP Cover Size Calculator.
- Select the same trim and page count you priced.
- Export dimensions for that format’s wrap.
- Do not reuse a paperback PDF as a hardcover upload.

FAQ
Is KDP hardcover more expensive to print than paperback?
Usually yes for the same page count, because KDP uses a different (higher) fixed cost in the same fixed + pages × rate formula. Confirm with current tables or the royalty calculator—do not memorize a dollar figure from a blog.
Do hardcovers get a different royalty percentage?
KDP describes the same 50% / 60% Amazon royalty structure for hardcover as for paperback on supported marketplaces. The money difference is mostly print cost and list price, not a secret third rate—except that Expanded Distribution (40%) is not available for hardcover.
Can I use my paperback cover file for hardcover?
No. Hardcover case-laminate wraps use different measurements. Generate a hardcover template after page count and trim are final.
What page counts work for KDP hardcover?
KDP’s hardcover help states 75–550 pages. Outside that band, choose paperback (if eligible) or change the interior.
Why only five trim sizes for hardcover?
That is KDP’s product constraint for case laminate hardcovers. If your paperback trim is not in the hardcover set, you cannot 1:1 clone the trim—reflow or pick a supported size.
Is hardcover available in every Amazon marketplace?
No. KDP’s hardcover help lists supported marketplaces and states hardcover is not available for Amazon.co.jp or Expanded Distribution. Read the live list when you set rights and pricing.
Should I publish hardcover first?
Only if the book is intentionally a hardcover product and the math works. Most indie launches still validate demand on paperback/ebook first, then add hardcover as a second ISBN when margins and brand justify the fixed cost and dual covers.
