KDP Cover File Requirements: PDF, DPI, Bleed, Fonts

A KDP cover fails more often on file construction than on “the design not being pretty.” Wrong canvas size, missing bleed, 72 DPI web art stretched to print, unembedded fonts, leftover crop marks, or a multi-page PDF will stop you in Print Previewer long before a human argues about your color palette.

The durable core: five gates

1. Single-page full-wrap PDF  (back + spine + front as one canvas)
2. Correct size with bleed     (0.125" / 3.2 mm on outer edges)
3. Image resolution            (≥ 300 DPI at placed size)
4. Fonts embedded              (fully embedded preferred)
5. Print-safe construction     (flattened, no crop marks, no extra white margin)

Optional but strongly preferred for commercial print exchange: export that behaves like PDF/X-1a (embedded fonts, device CMYK or other print color, no live transparency surprises). KDP’s manuscript PDF guidance prefers PDF/X-1a; cover help requires a single PDF meeting size, bleed, and quality rules. Aiming at PDF/X-1a is how professionals keep those gates from failing silently.

Five cover file gates: single PDF, bleed, 300 DPI, embedded fonts, print-safe construction

1. File type and structure

From KDP’s Create a Paperback Cover help:

Your cover must be a single PDF that includes the back cover, spine, and front cover as one image (one continuous wrap, left to right for standard LTR books).
Cover files larger than 650 MB will not convert. KDP recommends about 40 MB or less so transfer and printing stay reliable.
Do not upload a front-only JPEG as the print cover when you are submitting a custom full wrap (Cover Creator is a separate path that accepts image formats into Amazon’s tool).

Hardcover uses the same idea—one PDF wrap—with hardcover-specific measurements (Create a Hardcover Cover). Never reuse a paperback PDF canvas for hardcover.

PDF/X-1a in plain language

PDF/X-1a is the exchange profile KDP prefers when discussing manuscript PDFs: fonts embedded, print-oriented color, non-printing junk less likely to survive review. For covers, treat it as the export preset that forces discipline (embed fonts, flatten, CMYK) rather than a magic checkbox that replaces correct dimensions. A perfectly labeled PDF/X file that is 0.05″ short will still fail size checks.

2. Bleed (covers always have it)

KDP requires 0.125″ (3.2 mm) bleed on the outer edges of the cover so background and full-bleed art still reach the edge after trim. Submission and fix-it pages are blunt:

Backgrounds and edge art must extend past the trim line into the bleed.
The PDF should be sized with bleed and have no surrounding white space or crop marks.
White letterboxing around the wrap can fail bleed checks.

Safe text and logos stay inside the live area (well clear of trim and spine hinges)—bleed is for ink that must run off the edge, not for the title you cannot afford to crop.

3. Resolution: 300 DPI minimum

KDP’s image and cover guidance: place images at 100% scale, flattened, at a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch). That applies to cover art and manuscript images.

There is no helpful “max DPI” trophy. KDP notes excessively high resolutions can cause timeouts or manufacturing delays. Target true 300 DPI at final placed size, not a vanity number in the export dialog while the pixels are still thin.

4. Fonts

KDP’s save/submission guidance: embed all fonts before submission; fully embedded is preferred over fragile subset-only workflows that break when glyphs are missing.

Checklist:

Convert or embed every display face on the wrap (title, author, spine, back-cover copy)
Avoid system fonts that refuse embedding in your license—swap faces before export
Outline-as-curves is a last resort for logo wordmarks; body copy on the back cover is usually better as real embedded text if you may edit later

Unembedded fonts are a classic “looked fine on my Mac, failed in Previewer” failure.

5. Color, layers, and cleanup

From cover and formatting help families:

CMYK is recommended so print color matches expectations better than untagged RGB screen color (soft-proof if your tool allows; still expect some shift on POD stock)
Flatten layers and transparent objects in the native file before final PDF
Remove crop marks, color bars, template guides, and software watermarks
No lock/encrypt on the PDF
Barcode: if you place your own, it must meet KDP size/resolution rules or Amazon may replace it—see live hardcover/paperback cover help for placement clearances

Order of work (so you only export once)

Lock trim, page count, ink/paper, paperback vs hardcover.
Size the wrap with the KDP Cover Size Calculator (or KDP’s template).
Design at that canvas (with bleed).
Place images at ≥300 DPI; keep critical text inside safe margins.
Embed fonts, flatten, strip marks.
Export a single-page PDF (PDF/X-1a-style preset when available).

What file type does KDP require for a custom print cover?

A single PDF containing the full wrap (back, spine, front) as one continuous layout. Cover Creator is a different workflow that builds a cover inside KDP from uploaded images.

Does KDP require PDF/X-1a for covers?

KDP requires a qualifying cover PDF and, for manuscripts, prefers PDF/X-1a. Using a PDF/X-1a-style export is the professional way to satisfy embedding and print-color discipline; it does not replace correct pixel dimensions and bleed. Always pass Print Previewer.

How much bleed does a KDP cover need?

0.125 inches (3.2 mm) on the outer edges. Edge art must extend into that zone.

What DPI should cover images be?

At least 300 DPI at the size they appear on the wrap. Scaling a small web image up does not create real resolution.

Do I need to embed fonts on the cover?

Yes—embed fonts in the file you submit. Fully embedded is preferred. Missing fonts cause substitution or rejection.

Can I leave crop marks on the PDF?

No. KDP expects a clean PDF without crop marks, color bars, or template chrome, and without extra white margin around the wrap.
