How to Publish a Puzzle Book on Amazon KDP

Publishing a puzzle book on Amazon KDP is not the same job as writing a novel — and it is not the same job as uploading a blank notebook. You ship a fixed-layout print product: trim size, black-and-white (or color) interiors, answer keys, a full-wrap cover whose spine matches real page count, then title setup with categories and keywords that match what is inside.

The constraint that bites
Trim size and final page count lock the cover — reverse the order and you redesign the spine.
Spine width is page count × per-page thickness for your paper and ink. Every puzzle page and every answer-key page you add after “the cover is done” moves that number. KDP covers are one full-wrap PDF (back + spine + front) with required bleed. A wrap built on a draft interior is the classic puzzle-book failure mode.
Irreversible (or expensive to reverse) decisions in order:
1. Puzzle type + audience + honest difficulty promise
2. Trim, ink, paper, interior bleed choice
3. Final interior PDF → real page count
4. Full-wrap cover sized to that count
5. Title, description, 7 keywords, up to 3 categories
6. Territories + list price (royalty floors per marketplace)
7. Publish → proof → live
Puzzle books are usually print-first (and not “low-content”)
KDP’s Guide to Kindle Content Quality lists puzzle books among formats better suited to physical form than reflowable Kindle text. Fixed letter grids and answer keys do not reflow well. Most publishers ship paperback (and optional hardcover) first.
Separately, KDP’s Low-Content Books page defines low-content as minimal or no interior content, generally repetitive and designed to be filled in. Its examples table lists puzzle books under not generally low-content. Do not check the low-content box just because the niche feels like an activity book — KDP says the wrong checkbox path can get the title rejected.
Step 1 — Finish the product before you open title setup
Before you click Create paperback on the Bookshelf, you need:

Trim, margins, bleed (print facts)
From Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins:
- Trim is the finished book width × height. Large grids often use large trims (e.g. 8.5" × 11"); smaller puzzles may use 6" × 9" or similar — match cell legibility to the page.
- Outside margins at least 0.25" without interior bleed, 0.375" with bleed.
- Inside (gutter) margins scale with page count (from 0.375" at 24–150 pages up to 0.875" at 701–828 pages).
- Bleed: required on covers. For interiors, use bleed only if art runs to the edge; if any page needs it, set up the whole interior file with bleed.
- Font floor: paperback text minimum 7 points (Paperback Fonts). Large-print marketing needs more than the legal floor.

Step 2 — Create the title on your KDP Bookshelf
High-level flow (print) from KDP’s own publish overview:
- Bookshelf → create paperback (or hardcover).
- Paperback details — language, title, subtitle, series (if eligible), author, description, contributors, publishing rights, primary audience, categories, keywords.
- Paperback content — ISBN choice, publication date options where offered, print options (ink, paper, trim, bleed), upload manuscript, upload cover, Print Previewer, proof.
- Rights & pricing — territories, royalty plan, list prices, Expanded Distribution if eligible, then Publish.
Title and subtitle
Title (and subtitle, if any) must match what is on the cover and describe the book accurately. Metadata guidelines ban promotional stuffing in the title field (generic keyword spam, unauthorized trademarks, “bestselling,” “free,” and similar). Puzzle books often put the format promise in the title (“Large Print Word Search…”) and the theme or audience in the subtitle — still honest, still cover-matched.
Description
Write a human description: who it is for, what is inside (counts, difficulty, answer keys), and what makes the book usable. Categories (up to three)
KDP lets you choose up to three categories during setup (KDP Categories). Categories should fit the book’s central content — inaccurate shelves are called out as a poor customer experience. If a browse path you want is not listed, KDP notes that keywords can help them shelve the book more specifically. Keywords (up to seven)
Up to seven keywords or short phrases in book details (Make Your Book More Discoverable with Keywords). Use reader language (format, audience, theme, difficulty) that is not already burned in the title or category labels. Avoid subjective quality claims, time-sensitive promo language, Amazon program names, competitor brands, quotation marks, and HTML. Step 3 — Upload interior and cover, then preview
On the content step:
- Set print options to match the PDF (trim, ink, paper, bleed).
- Upload the interior manuscript (PDF for fixed puzzle layouts is the usual path).
- Upload the full-wrap cover PDF sized for the actual page count KDP reports after interior upload — if the count differs from your design assumption, re-export the cover before you publish.
- Run Print Previewer and fix margin, overflow, and low-resolution warnings.
- Order a proof or author copy when you want physical confirmation (recommended for first puzzle titles — screen grids lie).
ISBN: for a standard print book that is not low-content, KDP’s usual ISBN options apply (including free KDP ISBN where offered). Low-content titles have different ISBN rules; again, puzzle books are generally outside that path.
Step 4 — Rights, pricing, and publish
On Rights & Pricing:
- Confirm territories you have rights to distribute.
- Choose the royalty plan that matches your price band (print 50% / 60% structure and Expanded Distribution rules are covered in How KDP Printing Costs and Royalties Work and KDP 50% vs 60% Royalty).
- Set list price high enough that royalty is not negative after printing cost — use the free KDP Royalty Calculator with the final page count, ink, and trim across marketplaces.
- Enable Expanded Distribution only if you understand the lower royalty and eligibility rules for your title type.
Click Publish Your Paperback Book. Status moves through review to live on the timelines KDP documents for new titles and updates. Keep the Bookshelf open until the title is Live, and verify the detail page: cover, Look Inside (when available), categories, and price.

Inaccurate claims are a content/metadata problem, not a marketing growth hack.
After publish: what you can still change
Many metadata fields and files can be updated from the Bookshelf after live, but page-count changes force a new spine and cover. Treat a major interior rewrite as a full package update. Keywords and descriptions are editable (KDP states you can change them as often as you like) — use that to refine discovery language, not to invent a different product.
