Best Sellers Rank
Listing & discoverability
Also called: BSR, sales rank
A relative popularity ranking Amazon assigns within a store and within categories. Rank 1 is the best seller in that list; the number moves with recent sales, not lifetime totals.
Best Sellers Rank is comparative, not absolute. It tells you how a book is selling relative to everything else in the same list right now, weighted towards recent activity, so a rank can improve overnight and decay just as quickly.
A book has a rank in its overall store and separate ranks in each category it sits in. Those are different numbers measuring different populations, and confusing a category rank with the overall Books rank produces wildly wrong sales estimates — a #1 in a narrow subcategory can be selling a couple of copies a day.
Any conversion from rank to sales is an estimate built on a curve fitted to observed data, not a figure Amazon publishes. Treat it as an order-of-magnitude read, useful for comparing books and useless for forecasting revenue precisely.
