How to write puzzle word lists with AI
Open Write with AI under Custom words, name a subject, and add a list you can edit. The click spends AI credits. Nothing is placed on a page until you generate.
In short
In the Puzzles panel, open Word Search and click Write with AI under Custom words. Name the subject, click Write them, and the words land in the box for you to edit, spending the credits shown on Standard or Max.
A word search is only as good as its list. Writing twenty words that belong together, fit the grid, and are not a brand name takes longer than laying out the page. Write with AI drafts that list from a subject you name, in words you can still change. It does this before anything is placed on a page, so a bad list costs a few credits and a delete, not a reprint.
Write with AI comes with the Creator, Publisher and Studio plans, and it spends AI credits. On the Free plan the button is locked. A Founders' Lifetime plan does not include it.
Write the list#
Open Word Search
Open a puzzle book. In the tool rail, click Puzzles. On Catalog, search for word search and click the Word Search card.
The settings open with a Theme and a Custom words box. A built-in theme fills the puzzle on its own. Custom words is where your own list goes, and a list in that box overrides the theme.
Open Write with AI
Under Custom words, click Write with AI. A small panel opens on the field. Translate with AI, beside it, is a different action and spends its own credits. Leave it alone for a new list.
Name the subject
In What are they about?, type a plain subject, such as harbor market stalls. The line under the field says how many words it will write, up to 15 when the box is empty, and that you can edit them.
Suggest themes offers other subjects and spends its own credits. Choosing one only fills this field. The list is not written until you click Write them.
Choose who it is for
Open Who is the book for? and pick Anyone, Kids, Teens, Adults or Seniors. Anyone is the start. The choice changes the kind of words, not the puzzle type.
Standard and Max sit under that menu, and each one shows how many credits it spends. The line under them counts the AI credits you have left this month. Write them uses the quality that is pressed.
Write the list
Click Write them. The button reads Writing… while it works. When it finishes, the panel says Added and a number of words, and those words are in Custom words, one entry per line. A note says Charged and the number of credits, or Not charged when this exact request was already saved.
Edit any line before you generate. Words that are too long, too short, or already in the box are left out, and the note says so.
Reading the panel#
| In the panel | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| What are they about? | The subject of the list. Write them stays off until this has words in it |
| Suggest themes | Other subjects for that field. Its own credit charge, and it does not write the list |
| Who is the book for? | Anyone, Kids, Teens, Adults or Seniors |
| Standard and Max | The quality of this click. Each button shows the credits that quality spends |
| AI credits | How many are left this month, on the line under Standard and Max |
| Write them | Writes the list into Custom words. While it runs, the button says Writing… |
The number of words is a draft size, not a promise. The box keeps what fits: up to 200 entries, each 2-20 characters, one per line or separated by commas.
Take the list off#
Select the words in Custom words and delete them. The theme above is used again, and the pages are untouched because nothing was placed. Closing Write with AI does not remove the list.

Common questions
Does Write them put the puzzle on the page?
No. The words land in Custom words, where you can edit them. The page stays as it was until you generate and place the puzzle.
Can I change the words after they are written?
Yes. They are ordinary text in Custom words. Delete a line, fix a spelling, or type your own. Clearing the box brings the theme back, because a non-empty custom list overrides the theme.
What does Suggest themes do?
It suggests subjects for the topic field, and it spends its own credits. Picking a suggestion only fills What are they about. The list is written when you click Write them.
I am on the Free plan. Can I use Write with AI?
No. The button is locked. It comes with Creator, Publisher and Studio, and a Founders' Lifetime plan does not include it. On those plans it still spends AI credits. The chip beside Write them shows the cost before you click.
Do I have to tell KDP these words were written with AI?
Yes, when they print in the book. A word list written here is generated text. Words you typed yourself, and words from a built-in theme, are not.
