Amazon KDP asks whether your book contains AI-generated text, images, or translations. What the question means, and when to answer yes.
The question KDP asks
When you publish or update a book, KDP's content declaration asks whether your book contains AI-generated content, and if so, which kind: text, images, or translations. For each kind you also indicate how much editing you did afterwards. Amazon's definitions draw one line that decides everything:
AI-generated — an AI tool created the content, even if you edited it substantially afterwards. Typing a prompt and refining the output is still AI-generated.
AI-assisted — you created the content yourself and used an AI tool to edit, refine, error-check, or improve it. AI-assisted content does not need to be declared.
When a SmartKDP book should answer yes
SmartKDP's coloring element catalog is AI-generated line art, and we keep a record of how every illustration was made. A book that places any of these elements contains AI-generated images, and the honest answer to KDP's question is yes, for images. The editor reminds you at export time whenever this applies, so you are never surprised at the publishing form.
Two things that do not trigger the question on their own: word-art headings you typed (your own text, rendered in a licensed font) and puzzle pages (made by our puzzle generators, not by AI). If the only generated content in your book is puzzles, the AI question does not apply.
Why honesty costs you nothing
Amazon publishes AI-disclosed books every day; the declaration is not shown on your product page and does not change your royalty. What KDP acts against is misrepresentation. Answer the question as asked, and your coloring book is as publishable as any other.
What Amazon KDP means by low-content books, the ISBN and distribution limits that differ, and a differentiation framework—without invented saturation stats.
Frequently asked questions
Does answering yes to the AI question hurt my book?
Amazon accepts AI-generated content and publishes books that disclose it every day. What gets books removed is misrepresenting them — answering no when the honest answer is yes. Disclosure is a compliance requirement, not a penalty.
My illustrations are AI-generated but I edited and arranged them myself. Is that still AI-generated?
Under KDP's definitions, yes for the images themselves. KDP distinguishes AI-generated (the tool created it, even if you edited it afterwards) from AI-assisted (you created it and used a tool to refine it). Selecting, arranging, and editing AI images does not convert them into AI-assisted content.
Which answer applies to SmartKDP's coloring elements and word art?
The coloring illustrations in SmartKDP's element catalog are AI-generated line art, so a book containing them should answer yes for images. The word-art headings you type yourself are your own text rendered in a font — they are not AI-generated text. Puzzle pages themselves are made by SmartKDP's puzzle generators, not by AI, so the grid, the placement and the answer key never trigger the question. What can trigger it is the puzzle CONTENT: if you use an AI fill to write a word list, a set of clues, or trivia questions and answers, that text was generated by AI and is printed in your book, so you should answer yes for text. Content you typed yourself, and content drawn from SmartKDP's own word and theme banks, is not AI-generated.
Do I have to disclose this to readers on the book page?
No. The AI questionnaire is part of the publishing flow between you and Amazon; KDP does not currently display the answer on the product page. You answer it each time you publish or re-publish the title.
What happens if I answer wrong?
Misdeclared content is a content-guidelines violation, and KDP can suppress or remove listings for it. If you realize you answered incorrectly, edit the book's details and resubmit with the correct answer.
