Listing & discoverability
Also called: blurb, product description
The sales copy on your Amazon product page. KDP allows up to 4,000 characters including any HTML tags, and supports only a short list of formatting tags.
The description is the last thing between a browsing reader and a purchase, and it is indexed for search as well as read by humans — so it does two jobs at once.
The 4,000-character limit counts HTML tags, which catches people out: heavy formatting can consume several hundred characters of budget before a word of copy. The supported tag list is short — line breaks, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, the smaller heading levels, and lists. Tags outside that list are not rendered.
KDP's guidelines bar several things from the description regardless of formatting: reviews and testimonials, pricing and availability claims, requests for reviews, contact details and links to other sites, and spoilers. These are content rules, not style advice.
