Also called: text safety margin, live area

The inset region of a cover or page where text and important artwork are guaranteed to survive trimming. On KDP covers it sits 0.125 inches inside the trim edge.

Safe area is the mirror image of bleed. Bleed protects against a cut that lands outside the trim line; safe area protects against one that lands inside it. Anything closer to the edge than the safe margin risks being clipped or sitting uncomfortably close to the cut.

On a KDP cover the published text-safety inset is 0.125 inches from the trim edge on the front and back. Keep titles, author names, blurbs, and logos inside it. The barcode area on the back cover is a separate reserved zone — KDP can place a barcode there automatically, so do not put anything you need under it.

Interior pages have their own version of this in the form of margins, and the inner margin has an extra complication: the gutter.

  • Bleed

    Extra artwork extended past the trim line so that ink still reaches the edge of the finished book after cutting. KDP's bleed is 0.125 inches — on every outer edge of a cover, but on only three edges of an interior page.

  • Full-wrap cover

    A single file containing back cover, spine, and front cover as one continuous image. It is the format KDP requires for print books, as opposed to a front-cover-only image.

  • Gutter margin

    Extra inside margin that compensates for the part of the page swallowed by the binding. KDP's required gutter grows with page count, because thicker books open less flat.

  • Trim size

    The finished width and height of a printed book after the pages are cut. KDP publishes a catalog of standard trim sizes, and the one you pick affects both layout and printing cost.
