6 × 9 inches is the size to pick when you have no specific reason to pick another. It is the most-used trim on KDP by a wide margin, which means the widest choice of cover templates, the most familiar proportions to readers, and the fewest surprises at print time.
It also sits right at the edge of KDP's standard-size band. The threshold is 6.12 inches wide and 9 inches tall, so 6 × 9 qualifies as standard and 6.14 × 9.21 — a difference you cannot see — does not. That single classification changes which printing-cost table applies, which is the strongest practical argument for staying at 6 × 9 rather than nudging up.
