5 × 8 inches is the smallest trim most authors reach for, and its appeal is physical rather than economic: the book fits a coat pocket and a handbag, which matters for anything a reader carries around and dips into.
The trade-off is page count. The same manuscript that fills 200 pages at 6 × 9 will run noticeably longer here, and since KDP charges per page above the low-page-count band, a longer book costs more to print. For a short work that difference is negligible; for a 400-page novel it is not.
This trim sits inside KDP's standard-size band, so it uses the cheaper of the two printing-cost tables.
