Self Publishing Titans alternatives for puzzle-book publishers
Competitor figures checked 15 August 2026. Our own prices are read live from our catalogue.
If you are looking for an alternative to Self Publishing Titans, you are most likely weighing one specific question: what does it cost to actually produce a puzzle or activity book, and what do you get for that.
This page answers that with figures read from both companies' own public pricing pages, each one linked and dated so you can check it yourself. It compares what is published. It does not rate the two products against each other, and it does not tell you which one is better for you — we build one of them, so that judgement is not ours to make.
Where SmartKDP works differently, we say what it does and what it does not do, including which plan each capability requires.
Side by side
| SmartKDP | Self Publishing Titans | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start making puzzle books | Puzzle generation starts on the free plan — six puzzle types, three generations a month, three projects. Every puzzle type is included on Creator at $19 a month. Free-plan exports carry a watermark and skip KDP preflight validation. | The puzzle and coloring book makers are listed under the Author tier, at $25 a month billed yearly ($300 a year) or $35 month to month.

| Plan structure | A free plan, three subscription tiers — Creator at $19 a month, Publisher at $39 a month, Studio at $59 a month — and a one-time Founders' Lifetime purchase at $249. | Four subscription tiers, listed from $15 to $65 a month billed yearly, alongside five separately-priced add-on subscriptions: ARC reviews, templates, niche lists, an author website builder, and a mentorship group. | Making a puzzle page without paying | The free Word Search Generator produces a print-ready PDF page with no account, and the free plan generates puzzles inside the editor. | Nine free tools are listed on the pricing page, including keyword research, a BSR calculator, a royalty calculator, a category finder and a trademark checker. The puzzle and coloring book makers are not among them. Source: selfpublishingtitans.comchecked 15 August 2026 |
What SmartKDP does differently
Generated puzzles stay editable
A generated puzzle is made of the same objects as anything you place by hand, so you can recolour cells, change fonts, move the grid, and edit a single clue after generating.
Every generator emits a semantic content model together with a subtree of ordinary editor objects — not a flattened image and not an SVG. There is no separate code path for “imported” puzzles, which is why a generated grid responds to the same selection, alignment and styling tools as a rectangle you drew yourself. It is also why re-running a generator with a different colour does not discard the edits you already made.
KDP preflight runs before the file leaves the editor
Exports are checked against KDP's published print requirements — trim and bleed, gutter margins, image DPI, embedded fonts, page size and count, and a 7pt minimum type size — and a failing check blocks the export and names what failed.
Included on Creator and above and with Founders' Lifetime. Free-plan exports are watermarked and are not preflight-validated. PDF/X-1a conformance is emitted on the CMYK export path. Passing preflight does not guarantee that KDP will accept a book.
The check is a gate, not a report you have to remember to read: an export that would fail KDP's requirements does not produce a file. The list of checks is derived from Amazon's own published print specifications, and the failure message tells you which page and which check, so the fix is a specific edit rather than a guess.
A duplicate-content check across your own books
The KDP upload package includes a certificate recording that no two puzzles in the book are identical in content, and that none is identical to a puzzle in your other SmartKDP projects.
Included on Publisher and Studio. The check compares identical content: a puzzle that is another rotated, mirrored, or with its symbols relabelled is not reported. It covers this book and your own SmartKDP projects only — not books by other authors, and nothing published outside SmartKDP.
The certificate prints its own scope on its face, in those words, because an author who reads “uniqueness certificate” will reasonably hear “these puzzles are unique” — and that is a bigger claim than any tool can make about the whole market. What it can tell you is that you have not accidentally shipped the same puzzle twice, which is the mistake bulk generation actually produces.
A record of what AI wrote, for KDP's disclosure question
The upload package includes a manifest recording which fields were AI-generated, which were machine-translated, and which you wrote, with the model and prompt version used.
Included on Publisher and Studio. The manifest records what happened. It does not summarise or interpret Amazon's policy, and it does not tell you which box to tick on the KDP form.
KDP asks whether a book contains AI-generated content when you publish. Answering that accurately months after the fact, across a batch of books, is a records problem rather than a judgement problem — so the manifest keeps the record and leaves the declaration to you, which is the only side of it we are in a position to be right about.
Four pages laid out by that generator. Each one is a free printable you can open and print before deciding anything:
Questions
Is SmartKDP a Self Publishing Titans clone?
No. SmartKDP is built around a single editable document model: puzzles, text, images and covers are all the same kind of object on one canvas, which is what makes a generated puzzle editable after generation. The two products overlap on KDP research and calculator tools, and differ most in the editor.
Can I try SmartKDP without paying?
Yes. The free plan includes six puzzle types, three generations a month and three projects, with watermarked exports. The free Word Search Generator needs no account at all.
What does the Founders' Lifetime purchase include?
It is a one-time purchase of a permanent feature unlock with fair-use generation caps — twenty Founders' puzzle types, watermark-free PDF export and KDP preflight. It is not an unlimited-usage plan, and it does not include the Publisher-tier features such as the upload package.
Do I have to pay for preflight?
Yes. KDP preflight validation is included on Creator and above and with Founders' Lifetime. Free-plan exports are watermarked and skip preflight. Passing preflight does not guarantee that KDP will accept a book — it checks the file against Amazon's published print requirements.
Which plan includes the uniqueness certificate?
Publisher and Studio. It ships inside the KDP upload package, and it reports identical content across this book and your own other SmartKDP projects — not across books by other authors.
