If you are looking for a Publisher Rocket alternative, the first thing worth knowing is that these two products do different jobs, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Publisher Rocket is a research tool: its own homepage names four modules, all of them about finding keywords, categories and competitors on Amazon. SmartKDP is a production tool: you build the interior of a puzzle book in an editor and export a print-ready file. If what you want is keyword and category research, Publisher Rocket does that and SmartKDP does not sell a replacement for it.

Where the two genuinely meet is the question of what you are paying for and how. That comparison is below, with each of their figures read from their own public page, linked and dated so you can check it yourself. We build one of these products, so we describe ours in detail and theirs only from what they publish.

What the product produces

An interior for a puzzle book: 109 puzzle types generated and laid out on an editable canvas, exported as a print-ready interior PDF in RGB or CMYK, or as a fixed-layout EPUB.

Six puzzle types are on the free plan; every type is included from Creator upwards.

The homepage names four modules: Keyword Search, Category Search, Competition Analyzer and Amazon Keywords Generator. It names no interior-design, cover-design or puzzle-generation feature.

Trying it before you pay

The free plan runs the whole editor with no card and no expiry, and the free Word Search Generator produces a print-ready page with no account at all.

Free-plan exports carry a watermark and skip KDP preflight validation.

The homepage lists no free tier and no free trial. The risk reversal it states is a 30-day money-back refund, described as no questions asked.

Amazon markets covered

The free KDP Royalty Calculator computes printing cost and royalty across all twelve KDP marketplaces, and the Listing Studio translates a listing into seven KDP marketplace languages.

The Listing Studio is included from Creator and its output is machine translation, labelled as such on every translated listing.

The homepage lists support for the US, Canada, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy Amazon markets.

What SmartKDP does differently

  • Generated puzzles stay editable

A generated puzzle is made of the same objects as anything you place by hand, so you can recolour cells, change fonts, move the grid, and edit a single clue after generating.

Every generator emits a semantic content model together with a subtree of ordinary editor objects — not a flattened image and not an SVG. There is no separate code path for “imported” puzzles, which is why a generated grid responds to the same selection, alignment and styling tools as a rectangle you drew yourself. It is also why re-running a generator with a different colour does not discard the edits you already made.

  • KDP preflight runs before the file leaves the editor

Exports are checked against KDP's published print requirements — trim and bleed, gutter margins, image DPI, embedded fonts, page size and count, and a 7pt minimum type size — and a failing check blocks the export and names what failed.

Included on Creator and above and with Founders' Lifetime. Free-plan exports are watermarked and are not preflight-validated. PDF/X-1a conformance is emitted on the CMYK export path. Passing preflight does not guarantee that KDP will accept a book.

The check is a gate, not a report you have to remember to read: an export that would fail KDP's requirements does not produce a file. The list of checks is derived from Amazon's own published print specifications, and the failure message tells you which page and which check, so the fix is a specific edit rather than a guess.

  • A duplicate-content check across your own books

The KDP upload package includes a certificate recording that no two puzzles in the book are identical in content, and that none is identical to a puzzle in your other SmartKDP projects.

Included on Publisher and Studio. The check compares identical content: a puzzle that is another rotated, mirrored, or with its symbols relabelled is not reported. It covers this book and your own SmartKDP projects only — not books by other authors, and nothing published outside SmartKDP.

The certificate prints its own scope on its face, in those words, because an author who reads “uniqueness certificate” will reasonably hear “these puzzles are unique” — and that is a bigger claim than any tool can make about the whole market. What it can tell you is that you have not accidentally shipped the same puzzle twice, which is the mistake bulk generation actually produces.

Four pages laid out by that generator. Each one is a free printable you can open and print before deciding anything:

Questions

Is SmartKDP a Publisher Rocket alternative?

Only for part of what Publisher Rocket does. Publisher Rocket's four published modules are all research: keywords, categories, competitors and generated keyword lists. SmartKDP's paid product is an editor that builds and exports the book itself. If you were using Publisher Rocket to decide what to publish, we do not replace it. If you were looking for the tool that makes the book afterwards, that is the part we build.

Does SmartKDP do keyword and category research?

In a narrower form, and we would rather say so plainly than imply parity. There is a free keyword expander that turns a seed phrase into Amazon's own search suggestions, a free KDP category finder, and a browser extension that reads rank and listing data on Amazon pages. There is no competitor sales database and no advertising keyword export.

Is SmartKDP a one-time purchase?

The main plans are subscriptions, because generation and AI features have a real per-use cost to us. There is also a one-time Founders' Lifetime purchase, which is a permanent unlock of twenty Founders' puzzle types with fair-use generation caps — not an unlimited plan, and it excludes the AI features and the Publisher-tier tools. The pricing page states its exclusions beside its inclusions.

Can I try SmartKDP without paying?

Yes, and the free plan does not expire. It includes six puzzle types, three generations a month and three projects, with the whole editor available; exports carry a watermark. The free Word Search Generator and the KDP calculators need no account at all.
