# KDP Title and Subtitle Rules

Amazon KDP treats title and subtitle as **metadata fields with hard rules**, not as free-form SEO boxes. The title must be the real name on the cover. The subtitle is a separate optional field with the same prohibited patterns. Series name and volume are different controls again. Break the match rules and you risk rejection, a broken detail page, or a forced new edition later.

This guide is the **field rulebook**: what each field is for, the combined character budget, the banned patterns that trigger metadata problems, series vs volume, and cover/manuscript match. For craft (how to divide promise vs search language), see [How to Title a Book for Amazon KDP](https://smartkdp.com/blog/how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp). For draft names, use the free [Book Title Generator](https://smartkdp.com/tools/book-title-generator?via=guide:kdp-title-and-subtitle-rules). For a free pass over title/description/keywords, use the [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:kdp-title-and-subtitle-rules).

## The constraint that bites

**The title field must equal the title on the cover — character for character as the product name, not “close enough.”**

KDP’s metadata guidelines: the title field should contain **only the actual title of your book as it appears on your book cover**. Cover-image guidance repeats the same idea for title, subtitle, author, and series on the art. Create-a-book help adds that title, subtitle, author, series, and ISBN in the **manuscript** must match title setup.

Mismatch is not a style choice. It is a metadata quality failure: wrong search results, impaired buying decisions, and support or review pain.

```
cover text  =  KDP title + subtitle fields  =  interior title page
series name field  ≠  book title field
volume number  ≠  series name
```

## Field map: title, subtitle, series, volume

| Field                       | Required?              | Job                            | Key rule                                                                                                         |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Book title** | Yes | Primary product name | Exact cover title; most-used search attribute |
| **Subtitle** | Optional | Additional content information | Same prohibited list as title; auto-colon on detail page |
| **Title + subtitle length** | —                      | Display budget                 | **Fewer than 200 characters combined**                                                                           |
| **Series name** | Optional (if eligible) | Links volumes | Title-style guidelines; not for low-content/public domain where disallowed |
| **Series number / volume** | With series | Order | Enter digits per KDP’s series flow (not “Book 3 of 4” jammed into the series name on flows that separate number) |

HTML tags are **not** accepted in title, subtitle, author, contributors, or keywords fields ([Create a Book](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G202172740)).

## Title rules (what goes in the title field)

### Must

- Be the **actual title on the cover**
- For print: appear on the cover (spine or front) and match metadata if it appears in the manuscript
- Be accurate enough that search results are not misleading

### Must not (examples KDP lists)

Prohibited patterns include, but are not limited to:

| Prohibited pattern | Examples of the shape |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Repeating generic keywords | “notebook,” “journal,” “gifts,” “books,” etc. stuffed as spam |
| Unauthorized other titles or authors | Riding a famous name you do not control |
| Unauthorized trademarks | Brand terms you are not allowed to use |
| Fake contribution claims | Implying people/entities who did not work on the book |
| Sales-rank / quality promo           | “bestselling,” similar rank boasts                            |
| Ad / promo language                  | “free,” etc.                                                  |
| Placeholder-only titles              | “unknown,” “n/a,” “null,” punctuation-only titles             |
| HTML | Any tags in the title field |

Collections of multiple stories should accurately reflect contents (e.g. “Collection,” “Compilation,” or “Series” where appropriate) and list stories in metadata when required by KDP’s multi-story guidance.

## Subtitle rules

From KDP titles and metadata help:

- Subtitle is **optional**.
- It is a **subordinate title** with **additional information about the content**.
- It must follow the **same guidelines as the title**.
- **Title + subtitle fewer than 200 characters** together.
- On the Amazon detail page, a **colon is inserted automatically** between title and subtitle — do not invent display punctuation that fights that layout.

### What a subtitle is _not_

- A second copy of the title
- A keyword dump (“romance enemies to lovers billionaire free”)
- A place for claims banned in the title field
- A substitute for the **seven backend keyword** boxes

If a phrase is true discovery language but not part of the product name on the cover, put it in keywords or natural description sentences — not as illegal title stuffing.

## Series title vs book title vs volume

KDP separates **series identity** from **book title**:

- **Series name** identifies the set of connected books (must follow book-title guideline spirit; no promo spam).
- **Book title** is still the individual volume’s name.
- **Series number** places the volume in order (enter the number as the series flow requires — typically digits, not a full phrase like “Book Three of Four” in the number field).

**Eligibility:** public domain and **low-content** books (notebooks, journals, etc.) are **not eligible** for creating a series ([series help](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GMFKBUS43QQ5AJ5A), [low-content](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GGE5T76TWKA85DJM)).

Do not paste the series name into the book title field “for SEO,” and do not leave series off the cover if the cover claims series branding — **match across surfaces**.

## What triggers a metadata problem

Common failure modes tied to KDP’s quality and metadata guidance:

1. **Cover ≠ metadata** (title/subtitle/author/series mismatch)
2. **Manuscript title page ≠ setup fields**
3. **Promo or misleading tokens** in title/subtitle (free, bestseller, other authors, unauthorized brands)
4. **Keyword stuffing** with generic repeated terms
5. **HTML or URLs** in title/subtitle
6. **Series claims** on products that cannot use series (e.g. low-content)
7. **Length**: combined title + subtitle at or over **200 characters**

KDP’s Kindle content quality notes also flag metadata that contains URLs, promotions, or references that impair good buying decisions. Treat the title fields as **identity**, not as an ad unit.

## Pre-publish checklist for title fields

- [ ] Cover front (and spine, if used) shows the exact title string
- [ ] KDP **Title** field matches that string
- [ ] KDP **Subtitle** matches cover subtitle (or is empty if cover has none)
- [ ] Combined length **under 200 characters**
- [ ] No prohibited promo, brand, or spam patterns
- [ ] No HTML
- [ ] Interior title page matches setup
- [ ] Series name and volume filled only if eligible and accurate
- [ ] Backend keywords do the leftover discovery work

Optional: generate alternate framings with the [Book Title Generator](https://smartkdp.com/tools/book-title-generator?via=guide:kdp-title-and-subtitle-rules), then validate the winner with the [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:kdp-title-and-subtitle-rules).

## After publish: what the rules imply

Title and subtitle are among the **least flexible** fields after go-live. Print titles may allow a **72-hour** edit window for title/subtitle/primary author after initial publication leaves In Review; beyond that, non-typo renames often need a **new edition**. Typos may be fixable via Support. Cover updates must still display the **current** title and author. ## FAQ

### Does the KDP title have to match the cover?

**Yes.** The title field should be the actual title as it appears on the cover. Cover art guidance also requires title/subtitle/author/series on the cover to match the corresponding metadata fields.

### How long can title and subtitle be?

Together, **fewer than 200 characters**. There is no free pass for a short title plus a stuffed 500-character subtitle.

### Is a subtitle required?

**No.** It is optional. If you use one, it must follow the same prohibited-item rules as the title.

### Why is there a colon between title and subtitle on Amazon?

KDP documents that a colon is **automatically added** between title and subtitle on the detail page. You do not need to put the colon in the title field yourself.

### Can I put keywords in the subtitle?

Only if they are **true additional title language** that appears as the subtitle on the cover. Subtitle is not a keyword list. Use the seven keyword fields for extra discovery phrases.

### What is the difference between series title and book title?

**Series name** labels the set; **book title** names the individual volume; **series number** orders volumes. Do not conflate them in one field.

### Can low-content books use series titles?

**No.** Low-content books are not eligible for creating a series under KDP’s series and low-content help pages.

### What if my title is rejected or blocked?

Check match across cover/metadata/manuscript, remove prohibited promo or misleading terms, fix length, and re-read the live metadata guidelines. For post-publish renames, use the update/new-edition paths KDP documents rather than forcing a mismatched cover.
