# A KDP Listing Optimization Checklist

A KDP listing is not “keywords plus a blurb.” It is a **stack of fields** that must stay consistent with the book and with each other: title and cover match, description tells the truth, categories shelve honestly, seven backend keywords add discovery without repeating what you already declared. Fix fields in the wrong order and you rework the same text three times — or ship a metadata mismatch Amazon’s guidelines already forbid.

This guide is a **field inventory and dependency order**: what to lock first, what to fill next, and what to check before you publish or update. For a free guideline pass over title, description, and keywords, use the [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist). For an end-to-end listing workspace (title, description, keywords, categories, upload package), see [Listing Studio](https://smartkdp.com/tools/listing-studio?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist).

> **Not affiliated with Amazon.** Rules below paraphrase public KDP help on titles, descriptions, keywords, categories, and A+ Content. Confirm against current help pages and your live Bookshelf before you publish.

## The constraint that bites

**Optimize in dependency order — product truth first, then discovery fields, then polish.**

Backend keywords cannot compensate for a title that does not match the cover. Categories cannot fix a description that misstates the book. A+ Content cannot rescue prohibited claims in the main blurb.

```
product truth (what the book is)
  → title + subtitle (match cover; promise + search language)
  → series (only if eligible)
  → description (persuasion + accuracy)
  → categories (up to 3 shelves)
  → 7 keywords (extra phrases not already covered)
  → author presence (Author Central bio)
  → A+ Content (detail-page conversion layer)
  → preflight (guideline check + store preview)
```

## Pass 1 — Product truth (before any copy)

Write five facts you will not contradict later:

1. Format and audience (paperback puzzle book for seniors, romance ebook, etc.)
2. What is **inside** (counts, topics, length, difficulty)
3. What is **not** inside (no answer key, not large print, etc.)
4. Comparable reader language (how shoppers search for books like this)
5. Claims you can prove (credentials, series position, edition notes)

Every later field is checked against this list. If a phrase fails the list, it does not enter the listing.

## Pass 2 — Title and subtitle

**Title** carries the identity buyers see everywhere. **Subtitle** carries secondary promise and search language. Together they must match the cover art and text.

Checklist:

- [ ] Title on cover = title in KDP (and subtitle if shown)
- [ ] No unauthorized trademarks or other authors’ names
- [ ] No “bestselling,” “free,” pure punctuation, or generic keyword spam KDP bans in titles
- [ ] Under the length buyers will actually read (KDP notes customers skim past **long titles over 60 characters**)
- [ ] Subtitle does not merely repeat the title

Deep dives when you need them: title strategy and subtitle rules posts in this blog series when published; until then stay inside the [Books Titles & Editions](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GW7J4WEKBVU25YEC) and metadata guidelines.

## Pass 3 — Series (only if allowed)

- [ ] Book is **eligible** for series (low-content and public domain titles are not)
- [ ] Series name follows title rules
- [ ] Volume order is correct
- [ ] You are not inventing a “series” of unrelated one-offs to game browse

Skip this pass entirely for low-content notebooks/journals ([low-content rules](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GGE5T76TWKA85DJM)).

## Pass 4 — Description

The description is for humans first. KDP wants content-focused copy; keyword dumps and restricted promo content fail policy.

Checklist:

- [ ] Opens with what the book is and who it is for (above the fold on mobile)
- [ ] Specific proof (counts, stakes, structure) — not empty superlatives
- [ ] No URLs, emails, phones, prices, “buy now,” review quotes, or review requests
- [ ] No keyword/tag list at the bottom
- [ ] HTML only from the supported tag list; **tags count** toward the 4,000-character limit
- [ ] Character count verified in KDP Source view

## Pass 5 — Categories (up to three)

Categories tell Amazon where to **shelve** the book in browse ([KDP Categories](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G200652170)).

Checklist:

- [ ] All three paths fit the **central** content
- [ ] You did not pick empty or unrelated shelves for a badge
- [ ] Primary marketplace and audience settings match the categories you chose
- [ ] Paths recorded so keywords do not retype the same labels

Tool: free [KDP Category Finder](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-category-finder?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist). Process: [How to Choose KDP Categories](https://smartkdp.com/blog/how-to-choose-kdp-categories).

## Pass 6 — Seven backend keywords

Keywords add **useful phrases that did not fit** title, contributors, or categories ([keyword help](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G201298500)).

Checklist:

- [ ] Up to seven short phrases in natural word order
- [ ] Nothing that only repeats the title or category labels
- [ ] No subjective quality claims, time-sensitive promo language, or Amazon program names
- [ ] No competitor authors/brands you do not control
- [ ] No quotation marks or HTML
- [ ] Each field under the live character/byte budget
- [ ] Candidates search-tested on Amazon

Companions: [The 7 KDP Backend Keyword Boxes, Explained](https://smartkdp.com/blog/kdp-7-backend-keywords-explained), [KDP Keyword Mistakes](https://smartkdp.com/blog/kdp-keyword-mistakes).

## Pass 7 — Author bio and presence

- [ ] Author/contributor names are accurate (pen name allowed if not misleading)
- [ ] Author Central bio, photo, and bibliography support trust on the detail page where available
- [ ] Contributor fields are not used as a second keyword dump

## Pass 8 — A+ Content

[A+ Content](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GHL7P99B7AA543CN) sits under **From the Publisher** and can add images, text, and comparison tables so shoppers who scroll get more of the book’s story.

Checklist:

- [ ] Modules follow current A+ guidelines (not a second place for banned promo claims)
- [ ] Visuals match the real interior and cover
- [ ] Comparison tables (if used) are accurate
- [ ] You did not rely on A+ alone for claims that must appear in the main description

A+ is conversion polish **after** core metadata is clean — not a substitute for title/description/keyword work.

## Pass 9 — Preflight and publish

![Nine-pass listing checklist: truth, title, series, description, categories, keywords, author, A+, preflight](https://smartkdp.com/blog/kdp-listing-optimization-checklist/nine-pass-checklist.webp)

- [ ] Run the free [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist) on title, description, and keywords
- [ ] Re-read title/subtitle against the cover PDF
- [ ] Print Previewer / ebook previewer clean for the format you ship
- [ ] Price and royalty math use **final** print specs where relevant
- [ ] Publish or update; verify the live detail page (title, cover, Look Inside, categories, price)

Optional workspace for building the package in one place: [Listing Studio](https://smartkdp.com/tools/listing-studio?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist).

## One-page checklist (copy for your launch doc)

```
[ ] Product truth sheet written (counts, audience, claims)
[ ] Title matches cover; subtitle earns its space
[ ] Series only if eligible and correctly ordered
[ ] Description: human-first, policy-clean, under 4,000 with HTML
[ ] 3 accurate categories (paths saved)
[ ] 7 keywords: distinct, policy-safe, search-tested
[ ] Author/contributor fields clean; Author Central updated
[ ] A+ Content (if used) accurate and guideline-safe
[ ] Listing Checker + store preview before go-live
```

## FAQ

### What is KDP listing optimization?

Aligning every public and backend field — title, subtitle, description, categories, keywords, author presence, and optional A+ — so the detail page is accurate, policy-safe, and easier for the right shoppers to find and trust.

### In what order should I optimize fields?

Product truth → title/subtitle → series (if any) → description → categories → seven keywords → author bio → A+ → preflight. Discovery fields last, not first.

### How many categories and keywords does KDP allow?

Up to **three categories** and up to **seven** keyword fields per title, per KDP’s category and keyword help pages.

### Should I put keywords in the description?

Use natural language shoppers search for inside real sentences. Do **not** dump a keyword list — KDP restricts keyword/tag-style dumps in descriptions.

### Does A+ Content replace a good description?

No. A+ is an additional conversion layer under From the Publisher. Core metadata and the main description still do the primary jobs.

### Can I change listing fields after publish?

Many fields can be updated from the Bookshelf. Keywords and descriptions can be changed as often as KDP documents allow. Title/cover mismatches and major content changes still need careful package updates.

### What is the fastest free preflight?

Paste title, description, and keywords into the [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:kdp-listing-optimization-checklist), fix findings, then re-check the live KDP editor counts and preview.
