# How to Title a Book for Amazon KDP

Your Amazon KDP title is not a place to dump every keyword you researched. It is the **name of the product**: what appears on the cover, in search, on the detail page, and in the buyer’s order history. Get it wrong and you do not just “rank worse” — you fight metadata blocks, cover mismatches, and post-publish locks that force a new edition for changes that should have been settled before go-live.

This guide is the **title/subtitle division of labour**: the title carries the promise buyers remember; the subtitle carries secondary promise and search language; both must match the cover and stay inside KDP’s metadata rules. When you want original title ideas from one line about the book, use the free [Book Title Generator](https://smartkdp.com/tools/book-title-generator?via=guide:how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp). For a broader listing pass after the name is set, use the free [KDP Listing Checker](https://smartkdp.com/tools/kdp-listing-checker?via=guide:how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp).

> **Not affiliated with Amazon.** Rules below paraphrase public KDP help on titles, subtitles, and post-publish updates. Confirm against [Books Titles & Editions](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/GW7J4WEKBVU25YEC), [Metadata Guidelines for Books](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G201097560), and [Update your book details](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G200736410) before you publish.

## The constraint that bites

**Treat the published title as nearly permanent.**

KDP’s own jumpstart guidance is blunt: once the book is published, **many title-setup details cannot be changed**. For title and subtitle specifically:

- On **paperback and hardcover**, you may edit title, subtitle, or primary author name only within **72 hours** of the title’s **initial publication date**, after it is no longer In Review ([update book details](https://kdp.amazon.com/help/topic/G200736410)).
- After that window — and for broader “not a typo” renames — you generally need a **new edition** (or support help for small typos only).
- KDP’s titles help page also states you will not freely update title/edition after publish the way you update a description; significant changes go through a new title path, with a required “Previously published as…” disclaimer in the description when appropriate.

So the durable decision is not “which head keyword ranks this month.” It is: **what name will still be true, legal, and cover-matched a year from now.**

```
title   = identity + primary promise (must match cover)
subtitle = optional secondary info + search language (same rules as title)
together = fewer than 200 characters
```

![Title vs subtitle: title is the promise on the cover; subtitle adds content detail and search language under 200 characters combined](https://smartkdp.com/blog/how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp/title-subtitle-split.webp)

## Title carries the promise

KDP’s metadata guidelines: titles are the **most frequently used search attribute**. The title field should contain **only the actual title of your book as it appears on your book cover**.

That sentence is the whole strategy:

1. **Write the cover and the metadata as one product name** — not two.
2. **Lead with what the book is** so a shopper scanning results knows the format, genre, or job-to-be-done.
3. **Leave room for humans** — KDP notes customers are more likely to skim past **long titles (over 60 characters)**.

### What not to put in the title field

From KDP’s titles and metadata guidance (non-exhaustive; check the live page):

| Avoid in title | Why |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- |
| Repeating generic keywords (“notebook,” “journal,” “gifts,” “books,” etc.) | Promo stuffing; impairs clean results |
| Unauthorized other titles or authors | Misleading / IP |
| Unauthorized trademarked terms | IP / metadata violation |
| Fake contributors or involvement claims | Misleading |
| Sales rank language (“bestselling”) | Prohibited promo |
| Ads / promotions (“free”) | Prohibited promo |
| Title made only of punctuation or placeholders (“n/a,” “unknown”) | Invalid |
| HTML tags | Not allowed in title fields |

If the phrase is a **discovery term that is not part of the real book name**, it belongs in the **seven keyword boxes** or natural description language — not in the title string on the cover.

## Subtitle carries search language (and more promise)

A subtitle is **optional**. KDP defines it as a subordinate title with **additional information about the content**. Same prohibited patterns as the title. **Title and subtitle together must be fewer than 200 characters.** On the detail page, Amazon **automatically inserts a colon** between title and subtitle.

### Division of labour that works

| Layer | Job | Example shape (illustrative) |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **Title** | Memorable identity + core promise | _Large Print Word Search for Adults_ |
| **Subtitle** | Theme, count, use case, audience sharpening | _100 Easy Puzzles with Answer Key — Travel Themes_ |
| **Keywords** | Phrases that will not fit title/subtitle | Audience, sub-themes, adjacent intents |
| **Description** | Persuasion and full proof | Hook → promise → proof → soft close |

Do **not** use the subtitle as a second dump of every synonym. Use it for **honest secondary information** shoppers and search both need.

![After-publish title lock: short edit window for print, typos via support, major renames need a new edition](https://smartkdp.com/blog/how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp/after-publish-locks.webp)

## What is editable after publish (title vs everything else)

| Field | Typical post-publish flexibility (confirm live help) |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Title / subtitle** | Narrow: print 72-hour window for some edits; typos may go through support; non-typo renames often need a **new edition** |
| **Description** | Editable (KDP states keywords and descriptions can be changed as often as you like) |
| **Keywords** | Editable |
| **Categories** | Can be updated via book details workflow |
| **Cover** | Can be updated, but must still show the **current** title and author |
| **Manuscript** | Can be updated for content fixes |

**Implication:** spend hours on the name **before** first publish. Spend minutes polishing keywords after you see real search behavior.

A new edition path is not free: new setup work, possible new ISBN decisions, and the “Previously published as [title] by [author]” disclaimer KDP requires when you republish under an updated title. Significant simultaneous title **and** author changes are restricted.

## A practical process for naming the book

### 1. Write the product sentence

One plain sentence: who it is for + what it delivers + what is inside. If you cannot say it in one sentence, you are not ready to title.

### 2. Split into title vs subtitle

- **Title:** the shortest honest name that could sit alone on a spine and still mean something.
- **Subtitle:** the rest of the useful promise (theme, count, large print, with answers) without repeating the title word-for-word.

### 3. Enforce match across three surfaces

- Cover art
- KDP title/subtitle fields
- Interior title page (KDP expects manuscript metadata to match setup)

### 4. Strip prohibited patterns

Run the avoid list. Delete “free,” “bestselling,” brand names you do not own, and generic keyword spam.

### 5. Length check

- Combined title + subtitle **fewer than 200** characters.
- Prefer a title shoppers will finish reading (watch the 60+ character skim risk).

### 6. Generate options, then human-edit

Use the free [Book Title Generator](https://smartkdp.com/tools/book-title-generator?via=guide:how-to-title-a-book-for-amazon-kdp) for alternative framings from one line about the book — then keep only names that match the real interior and the cover you will print.

### 7. Search-test the name

Search the exact title and close variants on Amazon Books. Check that results look like your category of book and that you are not colliding with a famous trademarked series you do not own.

### 8. Lock before cover finalization

Changing the title after the wrap is designed means new cover text and a new spine layout if length changes. Name → cover → publish, not the reverse.

## Fiction vs nonfiction vs activity books

| Type | Title tends to carry | Subtitle tends to carry |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| **Fiction** | Story identity, series hooks | Trope, tone, “Book 2 of…” only if accurate |
| **Nonfiction** | Outcome or topic | Method, audience, credentials (if true) |
| **Activity / puzzle** | Format + audience | Count, difficulty, theme, answer key |

Activity books often need **format words in the title** because that _is_ the product name shoppers search — still as a real title on the cover, not as a stuffed keyword string.

## Common title failures

- Cover says one name; KDP field says another
- Subtitle is a keyword list with no human phrase structure
- Title overstuffed past readability
- “Free,” “bestseller,” or another author’s brand in the name
- Renaming the book a month after launch because the first name was a draft

## FAQ

### How do you title a book for Amazon KDP?

Write the real product name as it will appear on the cover. Put secondary content detail in the optional subtitle. Keep title + subtitle under 200 characters, follow KDP’s prohibited-item list, and match cover, metadata, and interior.

### What is the difference between title and subtitle on KDP?

The title is the primary book name. The subtitle is optional additional information about the content. Both share the same guideline family; Amazon displays them with an automatic colon between them.

### How long can a KDP title be?

Title and subtitle **together** must be **fewer than 200 characters**. Separately, KDP notes buyers often skim past titles **over 60 characters** — aim for clarity, not maximum length.

### Can I change my book title after I publish?

Only in narrow cases. Print titles may allow title/subtitle edits within **72 hours** of initial publication (after review). Small typos may be fixed via KDP Support. Other renames generally require a **new edition** and KDP’s previously-published disclaimer rules. Always re-check the live update-details table for your format.

### Should I put keywords in the title?

Only if those words are **part of the actual book name on the cover**. Do not stuff generic keywords or promo language. Extra discovery phrases go in the seven keyword fields.

### Does the title have to match the cover?

**Yes.** KDP’s metadata guidelines require the title field to be the actual title as it appears on the cover. Cover updates after publish must still show the current title and author.

### What if I only need to fix a typo?

KDP’s typo-help path lets Support correct small title or author typos on published books in many cases. Changes that are not typos (shortening a title, switching to a pen name, etc.) usually mean republishing as a new edition.
